There are 12 months in a year except when there is a Adhik maas (extra month) which is inserted to keep the lunar and solar calendars aligned. The position of Adhik Maas amongst the other months is variable, re-occurring about every 32.5 months, or approximately once in 3 years.

- Jyaishṭha (May–June)
- Ashadh (June–July)
- Shravan (July–August)
- Bhadrapad (August–September)
- Ashvin (September–October)
- Kartik (October–November)
- Agrahayan (November–December)
- Paush (December–January)
- Magh (January–February)
